Atlanta Country Club Luxury HomeSustainably sourced wood products for residential home buildRoot-to-Fruit Story View fullsize One of the primary components for sustainable building is taking in to consideration the local environment, and optimizing the usefulness and economy of materials. Thinking holistically about the environmental and neighborhood stewardship, a residential homeowner seeking to build a new custom home engaged Eutree to help repurpose trees identified for removal on a new parcel of land in Atlanta Country Club.Eutree worked with the client and builder Steve Edison Custom Homes to identify and salvage logs that could be crafted into flooring, paneling, mantles, furniture pieces and other architectural wood products based on the client’s architectural and design plans. View fullsize While the removal of some trees was required for removal due to construction or hazardous reasons, the client and Eutree worked with local arborist to minimize the impact to the tree canopy and surrounding environment. View fullsize Each locally sourced tree was selected for a specific purpose. The selection criteria is a core value of sustainable building that allows for intentional design of the product. Featured here are poplar logs that were selected for paneling. View fullsize Long pine logs were selected to be crafted into exposed beams and architectural accents throughout the home. View fullsize Once beams are milled, they spend several months weathering in Eutree’s lumberyard to achieve the client’s aesthetic for a natural old world look. Each cant is brought inside to be milled into lumber boards. Eutree’s project manager discusses the resawing plan with the client and demonstrates how the cants will be resawed into boards to make flooring, lumber boards and paneling. Each cant is ressawed into individual lumber boards. Featured here is a rainbow poplar board that will eventually be crafted into paneling with a gray finish for the client’s wine room. Lumber boards are stacked, stickered and labeled. Once all lumber is milled and resawed into boards, it is placed in Eutree’s lumberyard where it will begin the process of slowly air drying. Over the course of several months, lumber stacks are monitored to ensure proper air flow is occurring between boards. Slowly air drying lumber ensure straight, durable, high quality boards. The lumber completes it’s air drying phase once the moisture content level in the wood reaches 20%. Once air drying is complete, each lumber pack then enters the kiln for the final drying step. After several weeks in the kiln, lumber is then removed and brought into the warehouse where it will then be crafted into hardwood flooring, paneling for feature walls, beams, slabs and dimensional lumber for furniture pieces.
